E – Symbols (The meanings or the interpretation of most symbols in this dictionary are derived from the Bible)

Eagle

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Psalm 103:5

Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

An eagle speaks of the renewal and restoration of physical or spiritual strength. Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles. This is much more than just feeling better. It is really about God literally restoring and renewing us.

2 Samuel 1:23

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

Deuteronomy 32:11-12

11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:

12 So the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

Eagles also symbolize the prophetic ministry. As an eagle waits for the wind to blow and to build up so that it can soar high and far above the ground, giving it an advantageous view, so is a person in the prophetic ministry. The eagle sees far and wide and it sees much detail. It allows the wind (Holy Spirit) to affects its direction, flight, and destination. An eagle in a dream can, therefore, speak of prophetic elements about a person who is functioning in the prophetic ministry. The prophetic gifts of discernment of spirits, word of wisdom, and word of knowledge operate in their lives. The revelations of sins in people’s lives and the discerning of God’s judgment for sins also function in their lives.

A person with the nature of an eagle is a person who allows the Holy Spirit to affect his destination. Such a person is directed by the Holy Spirit. This is symbolized by an eagle in dreams and visions.

Jeremiah 48:40, 42

Behold, one shall fly like an eagle, And spread his wings over Moab. And Moab shall be destroyed as a people, Because he exalted himself against the Lord.

Hosea 8:1

Set the trumpet to your mouth! He shall come like an eagle against the house of the Lord, Because they have transgressed My covenant And rebelled against My law.

In some cases, the judgment of the Lord is symbolized by an eagle as seen in the Scriptures above. The symbolism here is the sudden, unannounced and swift act of judgment just like an eagle suddenly catches their prey by surprise.

An eagle soaring on the wind whilst scouting the ground for prey symbolizes a person who is depending on the leading of the Holy Spirit toward financial breakthroughs and propositions.

See “Animals” and “Creatures (Of the air)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Eagle (Flying)

John 6:14

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

An eagle flying speaks of a prophet or a prophetic ministry. Such a person operates in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially the revelation gifts.

See “Animals” and “Creatures (Of the air)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Eagle (Landing)

Seeing that an eagle is a symbol for the prophetic ministry, an eagle coming in to land in a dream, speaks of a specific prophecy coming into fulfillment. It is important to note the color of the eagle and also other symbols in the dream, to understand which prophecy is referred to.

Eagles speak of prophecies from God where outside influences do not play a role in terms of the fulfillment of the prophecy. God will ensure that such a prophecy comes into fulfillment irrespective of obstacles, circumstances, obedience or disobedience.

This is different when we see an aircraft coming in for a landing. In such cases, the fulfillment of the prophecy depends on human behavior. Such prophecies depend on us believing, praying and being obedient to ensure that such promises come into fulfillment. A crashed aircraft indicates that a certain prophetic word has not and will not come into fulfillment. See “Vehicle (aircraft)”

See “Animals” and “Creatures (Of the air)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Ear(s)

Proverbs 28:9

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

Proverbs4:20

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

Psalm 40:6

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

Job 13:1

Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.

Ears symbolize obedience. It speaks of people who hear what God says and who do what God says. It speaks of the ability to hear from God. Such people receive the revelations of God.

Always remember to take the difference in meanings into consideration in terms of whether it is the left or right body part that you dreamed of. See “Directions and Locations (movement or location) in dreams and visions (Human body parts)”

Ear (Left)

Psalm 115:6

They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not.

The left ear of a human being symbolizes a person who is disobedient. Such a person does not hear what God says and does not carry out the will of God. It speaks of disobeying the word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Ear (Right)

John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

The right ear of a human being symbolizes a person with sheep-like obedience. Such a person hears what God says and does what God says. It speaks of openness to the word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit. It speaks of a true child of God.

Always remember to take the difference in meanings into consideration in terms of whether it is the left or right body part that you dreamed of. See “Directions and Locations (movement or location) in dreams and visions (Human body parts)”

Ears (Some blockage removed from ears)

When a person dreams he is removing a blockage in his ear it symbolizes God opening his spiritual ears to hear and to understand. This entails the removal of spiritual blockages and hindrances of all sorts in a person’s life so he can hear the voice of God.

Earthquake

Revelation 16:18-19

18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

Isaiah 24:20

The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

Haggai 2:6

For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land.

Earthquakes in dreams and visions symbolize the judgment and “shakings” (earth-moving and groundbreaking acts and moves of God) of God. It speaks of the lives of people being disrupted and dramatically changed or altered. The changing in their lives is a change in the spiritual landscape of those people. It is, therefore, about nations (people) and not the natural earth.

See “Landslide”

East

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Genesis 3:24

So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Revelation 16:12

And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Ezekiel 43:1-2

1 Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east:

2 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.

The east is where the sun rises. The sun, in this sense, symbolizes the light and the glory of God. It speaks of deliverance, redemption, and help. Just as the sun disperses all darkness, so the light and the glory of God disperses all spiritual darkness. It brings hope, peace, and deliverance. This is symbolized by the “east” in dreams and visions.

Eating

Luke 13:26

Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

Revelation 10:9

And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

Ezekiel 3:1-3

1 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.

2 So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.

3 And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.

Eating is a symbol for meditating and digesting the word of God. We become one with God when we eat the bread of communion (we symbolically eat the bread (body of Christ) but in reality, it is exactly what happen in the spirit realm. We become one body in Christ (the church or the body of Christ).

In another sense, when we dream of people eating and drinking it speaks of brotherly fellowship. It speaks of people listening to and adhering to the word of God together as a group. It speaks of people enjoying Christ Jesus and the words that He brought to us from the Father.

Eden

Joel 2:3

A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

Ezekiel 36:35

And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.

Dreaming of the garden of Eden symbolizes experiencing pleasure, paradise, and kingdom life in whatever context is presented in the dream, or vision. It is about being free and safe and being sustained and lacking nothing.

Edify

I Corinthians 14:4

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

1 Corinthians 8:1

Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

When we dream of someone edifying others in dreams and visions it speaks of he or she building up the faith of such people. Dreaming of speaking in tongues symbolizes us edifying ourselves in the context that is presented in the dream. Giving people items like gifts, blankets, clothes, furniture and so forth speaks of that person edifying them by giving them spiritual gifts that change their lives.

Egg

An egg symbolizes that a certain condition or a certain matter will be established in due time. The emphasis is on the time period before this condition will materialize. Just as it takes time and patience for a chick to hatch from an egg, so this situation is in the (incubation) process of being established in due course. Time and patience and sometimes prayer is needed before something materializes (hatch).

Chicks in the process of hatching in a dream or a vision, speak of a waiting period being over and that the condition is materializing.

In a negative sense, it speaks of a person who is reluctant to take decisions causing a delay.

Eggs (Walking on eggs)

The walking on eggs in a dream, speaks of sensitivity in terms of relationships. Obviously, this kind of relationship is not normal. We should not be too scared to do or to say something when we are in the presence of a particular person.

Egg (Crocodile)

Crocodile eggs symbolize a person harboring negative and/or dishonest thoughts that lead to slyness and slickness and eventually to other people being harmed. Take note that this person did not yet carry out these thoughts and plans but he is harboring such thoughts already (eggs not hatched yet). Soon these “eggs” will hatch and then he will put his plans in action.

See “Animals” and “Crocodile” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Egg (Dove)

A dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Therefore a dove egg speaks of the time, the patience and the prayer needed until the Holy Spirit acts in a particular situation.

Egypt

Revelation 11:8

And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

When we dream of Egypt it symbolizes bondage, worldliness and “whoredom”. In the Scripture above we see Jerusalem being called Egypt referring to the terrible sins that have been committed in the city at the time of the fulfillment of that prophecy.

Eight

Eighteen

Elephant

Zechariah 4:6

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

An elephant symbolizes a person with a dominant or manipulative or overpowering spirit. It also speaks of a person with an unforgiving attitude. An elephant does not forget and an elephant dominates and manipulates. An elephant is quite the opposite from people who do not trust in their own abilities but on God and his Spirit.

See “Animals” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Elevator

1 Peter 2:5

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Romans 12:2

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Psalm 75:6-7

6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Moving up and down in an elevator speaks of spiritual promotion (up) or demotion (down). Elevators have the same meaning as stairs with one difference; with stairs, a bit of human effort is required. Not so much effort is required as with a ladder but still, some effort is required to obtain the promotion in terms of going up the stairs.

No human effort is required when we move up in an elevator which speaks of no spiritual activities required to obtain spiritual promotion. This speaks of God or someone else performing whatever is required to enable us to be promoted. The same is true for going down in which case we are being demoted because of the activities of someone else. See “Stairs” and “Ladder”

Eleven

See “Numbers in dreams and visions (Eleven)”

Embracing

Whenever you dream of a person embracing you it speaks of that person having caring thoughts for you. This indicates that such a person has your well being at heart. They want you to be well and they will probably do what is necessary to assist you when you experience problems in your life. See “Kissing” and “Smiling” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Emerald

Revelation 4:3

And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

Revelation 21:19

And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald.

An emerald in dreams and visions symbolizes the glories of God and his saints. It speaks of that wonderful presence and characteristics of God on display for people to see and to experience.

Ensign

Psalm 74:4

Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.

Zechariah 9:16

And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.

Isaiah 11:12

And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

An ensign symbolizes protection and a standard lifted high. It symbolizes everything that a nation or a group of people stand for. See “Flag” and see “Banner”

Envelopes

When you dream of envelopes it symbolizes messages from God. These messages may come through reading the letters of Paul which he wrote to the churches or it may be through the reading of books or daily devotions. God sometimes personalize these letters or these books by confirming that it is from him to you personally.

See “Letters”

Esau

Hebrews 12:16

Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

Dreaming of Esau of the Bible speaks of a person who is sensual, profane and a fleshly man. Such a person does not esteem important things in life worthy or precious. People like Esau will give wonderful spiritual riches away without thinking. They will lose everything they have if they do not repent. God and his kingdom and his blessings are of the utmost importance and extremely valuable. People should know it and act accordingly.

Eye

Matthew 6:22-23

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Ephesians 1:18-19

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.

When you dream of eyes it speaks of the ability to see or understand spiritual matters. It speaks of insight in the ways, the will and the kingdom of God. When you dream that you look at something but find that your vision is a little bit out of focus it means that you do not yet have a completely clear insight into spiritual matters (probably the specific aspect symbolized in the dream or vision). If you dream that your eyes suddenly move into focus it means that God is giving you a complete insight into his word, will, and kingdom, usually pertaining to a specific aspect or subject or situation. This is rarely a sign of complete insight into the word of God, the will of God and the ways of God in its entirety. When you dream of a person with blue eyes it speaks of such a person having insight into the revelations of God. When you dream of a person with green eyes it is a bit more complicated: It may speak of such a person having a good understanding of spiritual and financial prosperity or, in a negative sense, it may reveal that such a person is being led by a fleshly intellect. As the Bible verse above suggests, a person in a dream, with black eyes speaks of a person full of darkness (unbelief, evil, doubt, and depression).

Always remember to take the difference in meanings into consideration in terms of whether it is the left or right body part that you dreamed of. See “Directions and Locations (movement or location) in dreams and visions (Human body parts)”

See “Glasses”

Eye (Closed)

A closed eye speaks of a person who is ignorant of God’s ways and spiritual matters. It speaks of a person who resists God’s truth, word, and will.

Eyes (Suddenly getting healed in a dream)

A blind person dreaming that God is healing his eyes means that God is giving such a person spiritual insight into spiritual matters. Although such a person was not really blind he was, in fact, blind to spiritual matters. This means that the person was healed in a spiritual sense.

Eye-salve

Revelation 3:18

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Applying eye-salve or dreaming of eye-salve speaks of the spiritual treatment of our spiritual eyes to heal our spiritual eyesight. It takes faith and obedience (our spiritual heavenly currency to buy) to obtain this spiritual eye-salve.
