R – Symbols (The meanings or the interpretation of most symbols in this dictionary are derived from the Bible)

Rabbit

A rabbit in dreams and visions symbolizes a person who tends to fear spiritual and natural situations and challenges in his life. Such a person struggles to overcome fear through faith. The Bible Scriptures and messages exhorting us and assuring us that we have nothing to fear in this life do not have much of an impact on such a person.

See “Animals” and “Creatures (Of the land)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Radio (Big with big aerial)

A big radio with a big aerial speaks of God wanting us to receive more revelations from him. He wants us to put in a bigger effort to spend time with him and to hear his voice and to study his word.

See “Radio (Being tuned in)”

Rags

Isaiah 64:6

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Proverbs 23:21

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Rags in dreams and visions symbolize spiritual poverty. It speaks of a person finding himself in a state of being poor when it comes to spiritual things. See “Rich” and see “Poor” and see “Clothing (Dirty and torn)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

See “Railway line”

Raiment

See “Clothing”

Rain

Joel 2:23

Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

Isaiah 55:10

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater.

Deuteronomy 11:10-11

For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs:

But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven.

Deuteronomy 32:2

My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass.

Psalms 78:24

And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

(Hosea 6:1-3)

1 Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Rain symbolizes spiritual or physical blessings from God. God allows it to rain on all people, good or bad. In this sense, rain speaks of financial or spiritual blessings from God although we did not work for it. A good rainfall, which is an undeserved blessing from God guarantees a good harvest. We receive those blessing through grace.

Rain symbolizes financial blessings but it also symbolizes spiritual blessings which are the word and the Spirit of God. The word changes us and the Spirit of God changes us. These two, the word and the Spirit, have the potential to completely change our circumstances and our lives. Both do exactly what natural rain does to the earth. It makes us prosper and it makes us victorious over the enemy and each and everything that comes against us.

See “Rainbow”

Raisins

Song of Solomon 2:5

Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.

Like grapes, raisins speak of the financial blessings that God promised us. The only difference is that raisins are preserved blessings. God preserved blessings for his children. It is financial blessings stored up for us to tap into and to use whenever we need it.

Rake

See “Garden (Rake)”

Rape

In dreams and visions, rape symbolizes the aggressive, unfair and cruel attitude and acts of people in persuading other people of their spiritual viewpoints and beliefs. These kinds of people actually attempt to force people to believe and to accept their beliefs. Whenever a certain belief is firmly established in a person then it becomes permanently part of that person, it becomes “seed” in him. It becomes part of his DNA.

When such a person rapes another person in a dream he actually forcefully deposits his “seed” into that person which symbolizes him forcing his views on spiritual matters or non-spiritual matters onto such a person.

A person can carry good seed (true doctrines) in him or bad seed (false doctrines). They can deposit their seed into another person but it should be done with the other person’s consent.

See “Sex” and “Rape (White man)” and “Rape (Black man)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Rape (Black man)

A black man in dreams and visions raping someone symbolizes a person who wants to forcefully move people to believe his false doctrines (a black man). It speaks of a person who tries his best to persuade someone in believing certain doctrines. These false doctrines are firmly established in this man’s spirit and that is why it is in his seed. It is part of his spiritual DNA. Nobody should ever force or aggressively persuade people to believe their doctrines. People should be free to believe Biblical doctrines without any pressure from other people.

See “Sex” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Rape (Brown or Hispanic or Asian or Indian)

A Brown or Hispanic or Asian or Indian man in dreams and visions raping someone symbolizes a person who wants to forcefully move people to believe false doctrines.

Rape (White man)

A white man in dreams and visions raping someone symbolizes a person who wants to forcefully move people to believe and accept his doctrines. It speaks of a person who tries his best to persuade someone in believing certain doctrines. In this case, the doctrines are the truth (white man) and are firmly established in this man’s spirit and that is why it is in his seed. It is part of his spiritual DNA. However, such a person should never force these doctrines on people even though these doctrines are true. People should be free to believe Biblical doctrines without any pressure from other people.

See “Sex” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Rats and mice (Dead)

Dead rats and mice symbolize past sins put right. This speaks of a person who repented from his sins.

See “Animals” and “Creatures (Of the land)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Refine

Isaiah 48:10

Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

Isaiah 1:25

And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin.

Zechariah 13:9

And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

1 Chronicles 28:17-18

17 Also pure gold for the fleshhooks, and the bowls, and the cups: and for the golden basons he gave gold by weight for every bason; and likewise silver by weight for every bason of silver:

18 And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubims, that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD.

Refining in dreams and visions symbolizes purifying and testing and trials with the purpose of purifying the faith and the character of people. It speaks of people being prepared for ministry and being prepared to allow God and the Holy Spirit to work in them and through them.

Refuge

Psalms 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalms 142:5

I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

Hebrews 6:18-19

18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.

Deuteronomy 33:27

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Also, read Numbers 5 and Josiah 29.

Symbols in dreams and visions that suggest some type of refuge (like an Old Testament refuge city) symbolizes us being safe in Christ Jesus, who is our refuge and our protection and our safe place. It speaks of a safe place where nobody can hurt us legally or illegally.

It is easy to understand that we can hide under the wings of God’s protection and nobody can do us any harm. It is another thing to realize that we hide in Christ even though we are guilty of all sorts of sins and crimes. All of us got a ticket out of hell because of what Jesus Christ did on that cross for us.

See “City” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Rend/Rent

Ezekiel 13:13

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.

2 Chronicles 34:27

Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.

Matthew 7:6

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Matthew 9:16

No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

Matthew 26:65

Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

1 Samuel 28:17

And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David.

Rend/rent of clothes or other objects or items in dreams in visions symbolizes grief, anger, and division. In one sense, it speaks of grief and anger because of what people did or what they allowed that caused a lot of disappointment and anger and grief to a person or a group of people.

In another sense, a rent symbolizes division. It speaks of people losing something because of what they did or because two different circumstances or situations are not adaptable. It speaks of one situation not being able to be changed or adapted so that it can co-exist.

Reset button

A reset button symbolizes the detoxification of our minds. Like a computer, when it has crashed or no longer functioning correctly, we need to reset it by restarting it. Just as the memory ram need to be flushed (getting rid of junk) and start afresh, our minds also need to refresh by means of a restart. We need to refresh our memories with the pure and powerful word of God. The reset button symbolizes the meditation on the pure word of God. We need to load our hearts and our minds with the word of God. We need to allow that word to influence us and to set us free from the junk in our memories. We need to take every thought captive and submit it to the word of God. A reset brings fresh life.

A reset button can also symbolize God resetting situations in our lives. We sometimes struggle with issues and situations in our lives for a very long time. God sometimes reset our lives by getting rid of such issues and situations.

Rest

Isaiah 11:10

Psalms 132:8,14

8 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

14 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

Hebrews 4:9

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Isaiah 63:14

As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.

Resting in dreams and visions symbolizes cessation from work, relaxation and being refreshed. It speaks of people resting in Christ.

Revolver

Ephesians 6:16

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

A revolver shoots bullets (missiles or fiery darts or spears or arrows) which speak of words of criticism or discontent or unbelief or negativity. The enemy (evil spirits) uses other people to “shoot” us with words. People with critical spirits toward other people usually say negative things about them or to them. If you dream somebody shoots another person, with a rifle, it means that such a person is saying negative things to or about that person.

This happens when a person is offended, negative, frustrated, discontent or rebellious. When a person is killed in the dream, (by shooting him dead), it speaks of the relationship between those people coming to an end because of those negative and critical words of discontent. The bigger the firearm the more severe the words of criticism or discontent or unbelief or negativity.

In a positive sense, shooting people with a white revolver with white bullets symbolizes a person speaking words of victory, righteousness, faith, and holiness in the life of another person.

See “Revolver (Pointing to the left)” and “Revolver (Pointing to the right)” and “Revolver (Pointing down)” and “Revolver (Pointing up)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Rhinoceros

A rhinoceros symbolizes a person with a strong power of tradition. Such people are very reluctant to change. They rather stick to old traditions and they resist any form of renewal. People with this attitude are very hard of hearing in a spiritual sense and because of their traditions they are very shortsighted. They easily become aggressive. The single horn of the rhinoceros speaks of such a person typically only interested in his own mindset and overpowering attitude when dealing with things. They usually attempt to solve problems or to achieve breakthroughs by means of their own ability to overpower others rather than through faith. Christians with this attitude attempt to achieve spiritual blessings by mind over matter instead of by faith.

Such people struggle to yield themselves to the Holy Spirit. Instead of praying for their enemies they rather treat them with “an eye for an eye” attitude.

In another sense, a rhinoceros symbolizes a person whose eyes are fixed on or remain on his problems instead of handing it over to the Lord.

See “Animals” and “Creatures (Of the land)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Ecclesiastes 10:2

River

A river speaks of a huge or abundant flow of financial provision and/or spiritual blessings.

In another sense, a river in flood speaks of a strong flow of the Holy Spirit which removes spiritual blockage like a natural river in flood removes all sorts of blockages preventing it from flowing freely. It also symbolizes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life or in a congregation.

Roads

Roads speak of spiritual direction and the circumstances that we experience in our spiritual journeys (walking or driving). It speaks of the spiritual conditions on the way ahead in our lives. It is important to note the surrounding objects or places that we pass when are traveling or moving on these roads. Buildings and areas and obstacles and geographical locations play an important role in the sense. It is important to understand that just a few seconds or minutes of traveling or walking on roads and paths and streets can symbolize or represent months or even years in our lives.

In another sense, roads symbolize the pastoral ministry. Pastors looking after people (the sheep) while walking the road of life with them will dream about all sorts of challenges and situations on “roads.” These dreams will help him to deal with these people and with situations in their lives.

See “Vehicles” and “Streets” and “Path” and “Roads (Downhill)” and “Roads (Uphill)” for a better understanding of this symbol.

Robe (Brown)

Brown clothing speaks of a person who is preparing himself to walk in worldly desires or sins.

See “Clothing”

Rock

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Peter 2:8

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

A rock symbolizes steadfastness in the Lord Jesus Christ. A revelation of God (who and what He is) brings steadfastness in our faith-walk with Him.

In a negative sense, a rock symbolizes a stumbling block which is a rock of offense. It symbolizes obstacles. In dreams, we see rocks on roads or falling down cliffs which or getting in our way which speak of difficult situations and challenges in our lives. Some rocks are stumbling blocks. Some rocks are spiritually dangerous situations. Rocks in one’s way when driving down a road or climbing a mountain speak of obstacles that need to be overcome.

A rock can also symbolize a false foundation which is not a solid foundation.

Rooster

Matthew 26:34,74

34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

A rooster symbolizes a person you are involved with who is untrustworthy. Such a person will betray you and will bring you harm.

In some cases, a rooster can also symbolize a person who is swearing and cursing which is a betrayal of the fear of God. Simon Peter had to “show” that he does not know God by swearing and cursing.

Rope

A rope is a symbol of bondage.

See “Bind” for a detailed explanation of this symbol.

Rose

Song of Solomon 2:1

I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

A rose symbolizes the ministry of Jesus Christ, through sacrificial life and suffering, honoring God the Father. He is the Rose of Sharon.

Roses also speak of the church honoring Christ and God the Father through sacrificing and suffering.

See “Rose garden”

Running

Running is a more advanced and effective way of moving than walking in the kingdom of God. It makes you advance faster and it achieves spiritual results a lot faster than usual. People jumping higher than usual in dreams, whilst running (think of the triple jump in athletics), are advancing at an increased rate and effectiveness, resulting in these people overcoming natural limitations. This eventually leads to people starting to fly.

Jumping while running symbolizes the attempts of a person to operate and function in the supernatural. It speaks of them not getting off yet but it also indicates that they are progressing in their spiritual development. They will be able to fly in the near future if they persevere.

  1. Interesting how the Rape definition defines the “White Man” as the “truth” and the “Black Man” as “false” smh

    • Hi Tiffany,
This is really interesting. It has nothing to do with race but everything to do with colors. See the meaning of the color “white” and the color “black” (Colors in dreams and visions). I explain it as follows in the Dreams Symbols Dictionary (See “Man White” and “Man Black” under “M”): A white man in dreams and visions symbolizes a person (with a message from God), of faith or victory or righteousness or holiness or truth. Please take note that in real life, in the kingdom of God, black people do not differ from white people at all. Black people are not evil and they are not Satan’s messengers. In dreams it is all about colors (See “Colors in dreams and visions)”. A black man (in a dream) may symbolize the situation in the life of a white man or a white woman or a black man or a black woman or any other race or gender who is spreading a false message of unbelief or a false doctrine. It has nothing to do with race or gender but everything to do with the authenticity of a message. It is not about race or racism. It is about the colors.
