My name is Basie Martins. I trust that you are all well and I want to thank you again for listening to this series. For you who do not know, this series is about spiritual warfare. In the previous session, we discussed the method that enabled Jesus Christ to defeat satan and evil. We have seen that to abstain from sin is an unexpected and remarkably powerful weapon in the church. It is because of this truth that God had to ensure that his children do not sin. He had to find a way or the ability for them to live pure and holy and obedient lives. That came through grace by the blood of Christ. The blood of Christ is so powerful that it destroys sin on impact. So powerful that it blocks sin in its tracks and from germinating in our hearts and in our lives. It keeps sin dead in us.
To do so, God saved our spirits by grace and not by works to enable us to be able to live sinless in his sight. For this reason, our spirits cannot sin. It is born of God and through the Holy Spirit and the spirit is always in harmony and in sync with God and with the Holy Spirit. It always obeys God in all circumstances.
It is our souls that sin. And when our souls sin the spirit does not take part in this. This is the part (the soul) that Paul talked about that gives mankind such a hard time. It behaves completely contrary to the spirit of the saved or regenerated man and the Spirit of God, but this aspect of our lives will be discussed in another session of this course.
In this session, we will be discussing the mistakes that exorcists often make when they cast out demons resulting in the strengthening or promoting of false doctrinal beliefs in the church of Christ. In turn, Christian observers make a few common mistakes when they watch these exorcists in action. It is so easy when you watch a YouTube video of an exorcism to make wrong conclusions regarding certain doctrinal beliefs.
We are also discussing the damage caused in the body of Christ, by ex-satanists and ex-witches.
This is a problem that Jesus Christ spared His disciples. When Jesus cast out demons in the New-Testament He showed the disciples exactly how to do it. He trained these disciples and He allowed them to cast out demons themselves under His supervision. Eventually, He sent them out in pairs to do the same. These disciples went out on their own to cast demons out of the oppressed all over Judea. They knew how to do it according to the will of God.
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
It is important to note at this point that Jesus did speak to demons. He also did allow them to speak to Him on some occasions but he only allowed them to say the minimum. He asked them their names and he asked them how many of them were inside a specific person and that is about it. When they asked Him questions He answered them very briefly and then He instructed them to keep quiet. This was not only to prevent them from declaring who He really was but by these actions Jesus also set an example for us.
He did NOT ask them questions about the way they operate, what they did with a certain person, how they destroyed such a person’s life and how they succeeded to enter a specific person. He DID NOT have long conversations with these demons. Why not?
I want to answer this with another question: Do you know how bad demons are? They are capable of anything. They have absolutely no inhibitions and they do not draw the line anywhere. They are capable of telling lies, steal and destroy the lives of people if they only get the slightest chance to do so. They cannot kill you but they surely will deceive you. We are NOT supposed to be chatting with demons. They are really bad company!
This is where many exorcists make a very big mistake. They cast the devils out alright. This is not the problem. I know of even backslidden or young and inexperienced believers who have cast out demons after they were suddenly caught off-guard by demons manifesting in their presence. Exorcists cast demons out of people and they are delivering God’s people. Their ministry is very important. Exorcists are anointed workers in the Kingdom of God. Some of them do not only cast demons out of people. They are also healing the sick but few of them are good teachers of the word of God. Exorcists are doing a great job but they often do cause a lot of problems and damage in the body of Christ.
Do NOT make the mistake to think that because a person is anointed that he is in the perfect will of God. In fact, some of these guys can and are sometimes just as deceived as many other children of God. Ministry and anointing do not proof doctrines. It only means that a specific person is used by God to perform a certain task or a work in His kingdom.
Some of them cause a lot of damage to other believers who witness how they deal with demons. Believers see and hear these exorcists and these demons and then they use this information to support and to prove all sorts of doctrines. One often hears statements like, “it must be true because even the demons say that this is the case” and so on.
This is a really bad mistake. Firstly you cannot trust a word that demons say. Do not believe the myth that demons will not lie when an exorcist asks them questions. People are under the false impression that the Holy Spirit forces these demons to tell the truth when they are interrogated by an exorcist. That is NOT the truth. Some exorcists tell the demons not to lie to the Holy Spirit but in fact, they are talking to and lying to the exorcist.
Have you ever seen a police detective interrogating a cheating, lying, murderous lunatic of a criminal? These people are bad and they will lie, cheat, destroy and murder whenever they can. They do not want to tell the truth and they will not if they do not want to. This is exactly how demons are. Like so many dangerous criminals they will sometimes tell you what you want to hear. It really depends a lot on what the detective is willing to accept and willing to believe.
Have you ever heard of the term, “doctrines of devils”?
1 Timothy 4:1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils
This verse tells us that devils or demons can create their own doctrines. They do it just as we create our doctrines but they also lie to support their doctrines. Doctrines of devils are based on pure lies but also on the word of God. They mix the truth with lies to make their doctrines authentic to believers. They preach these doctrines and they teach these doctrines to each other and to people. Yes, they do preach to and they do teach other demons and as the above Scripture suggests, they also teach people who are willing to be deceived. Not only unsaved people or people who departed from the faith but also Christians can and are being deceived this way. They promote their doctrines because it opens a whole lot of doors for them. One of their strategies is to persist with these lies to achieve their goals, even when an exorcist is interrogating them.
We don’t have to speak to demons. The Bible is the only and true foundation of all Godly doctrines, so why do we question demons to gain information about the way they operate and other doctrinal issues? Why do we want to know detail and information about them and their ways? Isn’t this what Jesus Christ warned us against?
But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
Revelation 2:18-29 was a letter from Jesus Christ addressed to Christians. It was the letter addressed to the church of Thyatira. As you can see these Christians were busy with things that Christians should not be involved with. They were busy with doctrines of devils. Where did they obtain this information or these doctrinal beliefs? To learn the depths of satan you need to learn it from satan. There is no other way. This information is not in the Bible. These Christians learned from demons and they taught other Christians what they learned from them. They were still Christians but they partly departed from God’s word and instead, they asked demons to tell them how certain aspects in the spiritual realm function or operates. This is a big mistake because the moment you do this you are open to deception. This is when devils start teaching you their doctrines.
Among some other false doctrines in the church today, two of them have really serious consequences for believers. Although they are integrated the second doctrine is actually a result of the first one. These doctrines are “generational curses” and “spiritual warfare”. Although both these doctrines have no Biblical foundation, many Christians believe in them as they believe in Christ Himself.
I have found that for some reason it can sometimes be quite difficult to get these people to see the truth in the Scriptures. Their belief in these doctrines is so strong that they immediately disregard Scripture that contradicts these doctrines without giving it a second thought. Many of these people have witnessed exorcisms and were deceived by the exorcist (unintentionally) and the demons that were cast out (intentionally).
Exorcists often ask demons for how many generations have they tormented people and how did they enter these people. They ask them how did they obtain the legal right to enter these people and so forth. These demons, to keep one of the biggest lies or false doctrines in the church intact, just keep on lying to these exorcists. Most of the questions exorcists ask demons suggest that these false doctrines are an accepted reality among many of these exorcists. They play right into the hands of these demons. They just proceed to build even further on these false foundations. The reasons for succeeding possessing specific people, when asked how they did succeed in possessing specific people, usually vary from curses that were put on these people to portholes caused by generational curses to some special cursed food or liquid that was consumed by people and they lie about how many generations they have been succeeding to oppress and possess a specific family, and so these lies just go on and on. The aim is to bring people under the impression that they can and are being oppressed and possessed because of situations out of their control. They were in many cases just innocent victims. They bring people under the impression that they are not really protected against evil forces. People under this impression are usually involved in a fierce battle attempting to defeat these evil forces in their lives. So this system or this aspect is actually an unjust situation. Any situation where people are being oppressed although they are innocent is unjust.
These are all lies!
Now I do admit that they do need legal rights to enter a person. Let’s briefly discuss this. What, according to Scripture, gives demons legal rights to enter or to possess a person? When can and may demons enter a person? A demon can enter a person only when that person is personally involved in sin. This oppression and possession take place progressively or gradually in phases. Demons cannot just enter people like they want to. God put very clear principles in place that govern this aspect. The demon of “lust” for instance, deceives a person to get involved in pornography. After some time this demon does everything he can to get the person to take this practice to a next or a higher level. Each time the person is incited with some kind of reward and each time the person willingly proceed with this temptation, the demon gains ground. Over time he firmly establishes his stronghold in the specific person’s life. Eventually, the person gives up his soul and eventually he gives up his spirit, all for the benefit of obtaining more and more pleasure out of this particular sin. This person actually “gives in” to the temptation or “gives himself over” to the temptation to obtain more pleasure. People enjoy sin and sometimes they will sell their souls for more pleasure.
The demon then enters the person’s soul (which is oppression) and eventually the spirit (which is possession). With Christians, it stops at the soul because a demon cannot enter the spirit of man whilst the Holy Spirit occupies the spirit of such a person. Take note that even a Christian needs to be delivered when a demon entered his soul, just like an unbeliever who is possessed (in his spirit).
The Bible is quite clear on the fact that we carry the consequences of our own acts. We bring things on ourselves. We are absolutely never an innocent victim of circumstances out of our control. No, when we are demon oppressed or demon-possessed it is a result of our own acts. We cannot blame anybody for this. You cannot blame your ancestors or anybody else for it.
What caused the false doctrine of generational curses to be so popular in the church? My opinion is that, through the years, false teachers and ignorant teachers preached this false doctrine with so much conviction that it made it very difficult for people not to believe it.
The mistake that caused the existence of this false doctrines were the following:
1. People applied the early Old Testament Scriptures to the church and to Christians. This is an error. Those Scriptures applied to Old Testament nations and the nation of Israel.
2. People applied the repealed laws onto Christians although it did not even apply to the Old Testament nations and the nation of Israel anymore.
3. People applied the national curse of Israel onto Christians. So a general national curse was incorrectly applied to individual families.
Why is it that many Christians are deceived into believing doctrines of devils although the Bible does not support those doctrines? Why is it that people so easily believe other people’s spiritual experiences although those experiences are not supported by the Scriptures? Spiritual deception is a big problem in the body of Christ.
I think it is closely connected to the power of “word of mouth”. When somebody testifies of the effectiveness of a new product that he or she bought and how well it performed or how effective it has done the job, people believe it quite easily. Why? Because when people testify of their personal experiences it makes the facts so much more believable, authentic or trustworthy. Now I agree that this is all good when recommending a book or a new product on the market but it is not a good thing when it comes to spiritual matters.
The human mind is easily deceived and one of the devil’s strategies is to exploit this aspect of mankind. This makes deception a lot easier for him. But how do we counter this problem? By studying and believing the word of God, and not so much the experiences of people, and by being a lot more cautious when it comes to the testimonies of people.
It is just not a good practice to believe everything that people tell us based on the personal observations that they make. Even if the statements they make feel or seem so authentic. We always need to judge those statements based on what the Bible says about those subjects or doctrines. The problem is that Christians do not always know the truth (Biblical truths) and that is a very big problem. Another problem is the fact that a lot of Christians have been taught erroneous doctrines for many years and they already have a big disadvantage.
This causes them to be exposed and this is how good and Spirit-filled Christians are being deceived into believing doctrines of devils. If you do not know the true word of God you cannot recognize false statements or false doctrines.
The problem is that there are many false prophets and evil people out there. Some pretend to be Christians or that they are well informed on the particular subject. The reality is that many of them are satanists or atheists or just plain ignorant people. This is what Paul said about this:
1 Timothy 4:1-2
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron…
Unfortunately, this warning is still applicable. Many people deceive many people in the church and elsewhere, daily, and it will never stop.
2 Corinthians 11:3
But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.
And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you”.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
The unfortunate reality is however that:
- People do interpret their dreams, visions, and experiences incorrectly.
- People just lie outright about their experiences. Some never saw a vision in their lives yet they zealously testify of what God showed them in a particular vision.
- People add to and subtract details about the visions or the dreams they had.
- People have false experiences, especially ex-satanists because of living in a world filled with all sorts of evil deceptions. The list goes on and on.
It is exactly for these reasons that we have been warned in the Bible to watch out for people who want to mislead us. Some do it unintentionally because they have been deceived themselves. Others do it on purpose. It sounds far fetched but I can assure you it is not.
Apart from the damage that exorcist cause in the church, the testimonies of former satanists or former witches cause just as much damage.
We all know that the world that satanists and devil worshipers live in is a lot different from ours. They are constantly involved in all sorts of evil practices, atrocities, lies, deceit, and all sorts of abominations. Just listen to the testimonies of these people or read the books that they have written after they repented from their wicked ways. People like Doreen Irvine, Rebecca Brown, Jeff Harshbarger, Mike Leehan, Zachary King, and Deborah Lipsky are just a few.
Many others testify daily about the dark evil lives that they lived and how God saved them. Of course, the salvation of these people are just wonderful and we are so glad for them. God really made a huge difference in their lives. They are living testimonies of the love and the grace and of course the power of God.
However, many of these people are given a platform in the church from where they cause a lot of damage in the body of Christ. Unintentionally of course. We tend to forget that they have been involved with demonic spirits and they lived in a world filled with lies and deceit.
The world of a satanist is a whirlpool of hate, lies, conflict, evil, darkness, occultic rituals, sacrifices, witchcraft, control, fear, murder, and other atrocities. What they do to each other is unbelievable. The world of a satanist is actually hell on earth. They are kept captive in a world where there is no hope at all.
All these people have been deceived into becoming a part of the evilest kingdom that exists. The kingdom of Satan is dark, evil and treacherous. People getting involved with satanism do not know what they are letting themselves in for. They will be filled with evil, lies, deceitfulness, and fraudulence which are in fact called doctrines of devils. The Bible calls it knowledge of the deep things of Satan:
But to you I say, to the rest that are in Thyatira, as many as have not this teaching, who know not the deep things of Satan, as they are wont to say; I cast upon you none other burden.
This suggests that their minds will be filled with lies and deception. It is for this reason that the Bible calls the intellectual thinking, the demonic ways and the evil principles of this evil world, the doctrines of devils. For me, it was quite a revelation to grasp that evil spirits create doctrines. These doctrines are carefully created by mixing the truth of the Bible with evil lies.
The devil and demons are in fact very intelligent beings. It is important to understand though, that intelligent does not mean wise. We see in life how very intelligent people completely reject God and the truths of the Bible. Some of them are scientists, professors, philosophers, and even religious professors. These people have been deceived and they deceive many other people although they are very intelligent people.
The evil demonic creatures in the kingdom of darkness do not differ much from these evil people. They do know that God exists but they also chose to reject Him. They are also intelligent but also not wise. They have been deceived by Satan and they are also deceiving other demons. To know that demons deceive each other was quite a revelation to me. Just as people allow the intelligent but unwise people of this world to deceive them, so the demons of the kingdom of darkness allow other demons to deceive them.
It makes one think of the lies and deceit that we find in the world of mobsters and criminals. These guys cheat each other out of money and they create their own evil worlds of power, lust, greed, and deceptions. That is where the doctrines of devils come from. Just as people allow the intellectuals of this world to teach them erroneous doctrines, so demons allow other demons to teach them doctrines of devils. What is so mind-boggling is that these doctrines of devils are being taught to people, even Christians!
This sounds grave and terrible but the saying that “every cloud has a silver lining” is also true in this case. The power of the creatures of this evil world is actually very limited and their impact on different groups of people is different. There are three groups of people in this regard:
We have Spirit-filled children of God, we have natural people who are unsaved and we have satanist and witches and other people who have been deceived into getting involved in treacherous occultic religions like Islam which does not differ from satanism that much.
The level of exposure to demonic activities and influences in terms of these groups differs quite a lot:
- Christians are the least exposed to demonic powers. Satan and his evil spirits cannot harm Christians at all. They just have no power over Christians except the ability to deceive them. They deceive them by tempting them into sin and they deceive them into not believing the word and the promises of God. They deceive them into unbelief. They cannot kill or harm Christians and their belongings in any way except to lie and to tempt. However, if they succeed in doing this then a Christian is in trouble. This is when harm can occur. This is when the lies and temptations can lead to all sorts of problems like sin, trouble, sickness, calamities and even death.
- Natural people or people who are not saved are a bit more exposed. Similar to Christians, Satan and his evil spirits cannot harm them at all. They just have no power over natural people except the ability to deceive them. They deceive them by tempting them into not believing the word and the promises of God. They deceive them into unbelief. They cannot kill or harm a natural person in any way except to lie and to tempt. However, if they succeed in doing this then a natural person is in trouble. This is when harm can occur. This is when the lies and the temptations can lead to all sorts of problems like sin, trouble, sickness, calamities and even death. You may ask what the difference is between a Christian and a natural person in this regard? My answer: A Christian has the Spirit of God and the power of God in him and has, therefore, a far better chance to resist evil and temptations. But it is for this reason that we often do not see much difference between the two groups of people. Very often their lives are a lot the same.
- Satanists, witches and members of other occultic religions are a lot more exposed. These people willfully became part of the kingdom of darkness. They bowed down to the god of the kingdom of darkness and in doing so they gave up a lot of privileges and the protection that they enjoyed as a natural person. Remember that all peoples belong to God. Christians belong to God. Natural people belong to God and satanists belong to God. God has established principles that govern the lives of all these peoples. God also established principles that govern the lives of angels and even the lives of demons. There are spiritual laws that limit the power and the abilities of all these creatures. Absolutely nobody can do whatever he or she wants. We are all limited, even demons are limited and even angels are limited. God will never allow evil to do whatever they want in the lives of Christians, natural people or satanists. As I said, satanist are however a lot more exposed. Satan can pretty much do a lot of damage in these people’s lives. Even these people can do a lot of harm in each other’s lives. They actually wreak havoc in each other’s lives.
This is where former satanists and former witches are experiencing a lot of confusion. They made quite a lot of personal observations whilst they were involved with satanism:
- They observed the interaction between demons.
- They observed the interaction between demons and satanists.
- They observed the interaction between demons and Christians.
- They observed the interaction between demons and natural unsaved people.
- They observed the interaction between satanists and Christians.
- They observed the interaction between satanists and natural unsaved people.
- They observed the interaction between satanists and other satanists.
All these interactions with all its dynamics must have been very confusing to them. In their minds, after they repented, they recall the interaction between all these creatures and their general experience whilst they were serving satan. Firstly they usually do not differentiate between different groups of people. Not to mention the fact that they lived in a very deceitful world (kingdom of darkness). Many of them may be under the impression that a Spirit-filled Christian is just as exposed to evil powers as a satanist. Even Christians are under that impression.
The devil cannot cause people to dream or to see visions. They cannot harm Christians or unbelievers. However former satanists are very confused when it comes to matters like this. This is not what they experienced whilst they were serving satan. Apart from their experiences and observations, the confusion is also caused by misinterpretations of
2 Corinthians 11:14
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
They know that Satan can deceive people by transforming himself and they thought that this transformation includes the ability to give people dreams and visions. This is however not true. He can appear to people to deceive them but he cannot give them dreams or visions. This is an ability that only God has.
Having said this, I am not so sure that this is the case with satanists. They willfully became part of the demonic world. They entered a very treacherous and deceptive spiritual world and are an integral part of this world. I am convinced that they fall under different spiritual laws than the other two groups of people. I won’t be surprised if demons can actually cause them to have all sorts of hallucinations and you can be assured that those hallucinations will be very deceitful.
It is for these reasons that I am very skeptical about the testimonies of former satanists and former witches. These people have been part of something very bad. Many of them believe after they became Christians, that they have an advantage because they have personal or firsthand experience of the world of the kingdom of darkness. They know how the evil forces of this dark kingdom operate and they know all their strategies. They think they know what Christians should do to counter all these strategies. They think they know how the enemy influences Christians and so on.
The reality, however, is that they do not have an advantage at all. They actually have a huge disadvantage. They were part of a very deceptive world and they were exposed to all sorts of demonic activities. There is just no way that they can trust whatever they saw or whatever they experienced in this deceitful world. They should pray that God removes all these experiences and observations from their memory so that they can have a new experience with Him based on the Bible.
I do listen to the testimonies of Christians when they testify of dreams, visions and extraordinary experiences. Some report that they died and saw heaven or hell whilst undergoing surgery and so on. I do listen to their testimonies but I am always very cautious about these testimonies. I always make sure that whatever they say is supported by Scriptures. If it is not supported by Scriptures I ignore those statements and I ignore the details of their experiences. I eat the meat and I throw away the bones. In the past, many of these testimonies were a real blessing to me and very encouraging and uplifting.
However, with many of them, I had to throw away quite a lot of bones. Why, because of the human factor. People add and subtract according to what is important to them or according to what they believe. Their personal beliefs contaminate their testimonies because they end up reporting what they believe and not only what they saw. They interpreted what they saw and then they give an account of what they interpreted and not what they actually saw.
This is evident when you watch YouTube videos about end times doctrines, generational curses, and spiritual warfare. This is why these false doctrines were so easily accepted in the church. When somebody testifies that they saw a vision, people believe those testimonies merely because the person said he saw it in a vision.
With former satanists or former witches, I am always extra cautious. There is no way that I am recklessly accepting the testimonies of people in terms of what they saw or experienced whilst they were part of the most deceptive world that exists, no matter how authentic it seems! Even if it seems to be Biblical because more often than not our own ignorance prevents us from judging if something is really Biblical or not. You will be amazed by how many statements and doctrines out there appear to be Biblical but proven not to be Biblical at all.
Most of the time former satanists have no clue what they really saw. What did they really see or observe? Did they see anything authentic at all whilst they were serving the devil in the kingdom of darkness? Were they deceived in this kingdom? Absolutely! Were they made to see certain particular things? Absolutely! Why? So that they can play their part in spreading the doctrines of devils.
Because of the testimonies and actions of former satanists, former witches and exorcists, two of the most dangerous doctrines, generational curses and the false variation of the doctrine of spiritual warfare, are widely believed in the body of Christ. Even though the Bible explicitly declares that generational curses ceased to exist by being repealed.
Former satanists and former witches are unintentionally spreading a lot of false information and false doctrines about these two doctrines based on personal observations. Let me give you a very sound rule which will always protect you from being deceived: Never ever build or create or believe doctrines based on personal observations. Personal observations cannot support doctrines in any way. It cannot even be used to confirm doctrines. We always need to go to the Bible to create, prove or confirm doctrines. There is no other way whatsoever. The testimonies of former satanist, witches and exorcists can never be regarded trustworthy as long as it is based on what they observed and what they experienced. We need to be very cautious at all times in terms of this.
We love former satanists and former witches. We are glad that they met Christ and we embrace them as brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. We love and we are so thankful for the ministries of exorcists. However, we need to protect ourselves against the unintentional deceptions that they pose.
This is all for today. In the next session, we will look at the right way to deliver demon-possessed or demon-oppressed people.
Thanks for listening. See you next time.
