What was his secret?

How did AA Allen receive this amazing power from God which enabled him to heal so many sick people from all sorts of diseases?

Who was AA Allen?

Asa Alonso Allen (March 27, 1911 – June 11, 1970), better known as A. A. Allen, was a minister with a Pentecostal evangelistic healing and deliverance ministry. He was, for a time, associated with the “Voice of Healing” movement founded by Gordon Lindsay.

– Wikipedia

This poor son of an alcoholic father and a drunkard mother was raised in total poverty. The circumstances that he had to endure were really harsh and it was absolutely a miracle that he got saved later in his life.

As an evangelist he drew a lot of controversy but he was still considered by many to be one of the most important revivalists to emerge during the Voice of Healing revival.

For many years he led thousands of people to the Lord and thousands of people were healed throughout his ministry. AA Allen simply had a powerful ministry. Blind eyes were opened, death people were healed, lame people could walk, people with all sorts of incurable diseases were miraculously healed in his healing and deliverance services. Even missing limbs miraculously grew from out of people’s bodies right in front of their very eyes.

Documented miracles performed by AA Allen in the Name of Jesus Christ

When AA Allen was questioned about this amazing power that he possessed, he told people exactly how he obtained the power of God.

This is his story: In the late 1930’s, right at the start of his public ministry, he was determined to find the secrets of God’s power. He began to fast and pray and seek the face of God. He told his wife that he is not coming out of his prayer closet until he heard from God. He even instructed her to lock him inside the closet from the outside. She did! Inside that closet AA Allen had an experience with God. In his own words, this is what happened:

“…I began to realize that the light that was filling my prayer closet was God’s glory!…The presence of God was so real and powerful that I felt I would die right there on my knees…Then, like a whirlwind, I heard His voice. It was God! He was speaking to me! This was the glorious answer that I had sought so diligently and for which I had waited since my conversion at the age of twenty-three…It seemed faster than any human could possibly speak, faster than I could follow mentally, God was talking to me…God was giving me a list of the things that stood between me and the power of God. After each new requirement was added to the list in my mind, there followed a brief explanation, or sermonette, explaining that requirement and its importance. As God spoke to me I wrote them down.”

“…When the last requirement was written down on the list, God spoke once again, and said: “This is the answer. When you have placed on the altar of consecration and obedience the last thing on the list, you shall not only heal the sick, but in My Name shall you cast out devils, you shall see mighty miracles as in My Name you preach the Word, for behold, I give you power over all the power of the enemy…”

“God revealed to me at the same time that the things that were hindrances to my ministry…were the very same things which were hindering so many thousands of others”

Here are the thirteen things AA Allen said the Lord told him. He would see the miracle-working power of God, if he understood and did these things:

He must realize he couldn’t do greater quality miracles than Jesus Christ

He could walk as Jesus Christ walked

He must be blameless like God Himself

He must measure himself to Jesus Christ alone

He must deny his fleshly desires with fasting

After self denial, he must follow Jesus Christ seven days a week

Without God he could do nothing

He must do away with sin in his body

He must not continue in shallow, pointless discussions

He must give his body wholly to God forever

He must believe all of God’s promises

The remaining two guidelines were personal sins Allen felt he need not share with anyone.

It is very important to notice that six of the thirteen points are about abstaining from sin in our lives. God told AA Allen to live a blameless life. He told him to kill fleshly desires. He told him to live a life of self denial. He told him that he had to do away with any sin in his body. The last two points on the list were specific sins that God brought his attention to. We do not know what it was but those sins stood between AA Allen and the power of God.

We know that sin gives the enemy a foothold in our lives. Sin is an opening for the devil to break down our faith in God and in His word. Read all about this in the posts, “How did Jesus Christ really conquer evil?” and “Getting rid of the weeds“.

When we pursue holiness, we are keeping our relationship with God and our relationships with other people pure. This establishes and maintains a state of harmony with God and with other people. When we live like this, our hearts do not condemn us. This gives us liberty and confidence and it strengthens our faith.

Did you know that it is absolutely possible to get anything you ask from God if you adhere to only two very important conditions?

Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

1 John 3:21-22

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

These two verses above is the ultimate test for any man of faith. If you meet the first condition you are halfway there. If you adhere to the second condition also you will receive whatsoever you ask God. This promise is actually guaranteed! I will even go so far as to say that it is absolutely impossible not to receive the desires of your heart, in more clear terms; whatsoever you want from God, if you comply to both these conditions. This is guaranteed people! I do not doubt this fact at all. These promises go hand in hand with the following two Scriptures:

Psalm 37:4

Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Philippians 4:6

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

The correct translation for the Greek word in this verse is “desires” and not “requests”. It makes this promise a bit more clear. There are actually quite a few other Scriptures that also makes it super-clear that we, when we walk in righteousness and in obedience, can and may ask whatsoever we want from God and we will receive it. It is absolutely guaranteed! Faith and obedience opens doors that nobody can close. It is the key to victory. This gives the enemy absolutely no foothold at all. Such a person lives a victorious life.

If you know that God exists but not only that, you also know that He is a good God who rewards those who diligently seek Him, and you live a holy obedient life, then you can and may ask Him whatever you wish and you will receive it.

John 14:13-14

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

As you can see, it is absolutely of the utmost important that we live holy lives in the presence of God. Without pursuing holiness we just cannot operate or function in the power of God.

Many people look at the lives of people who had powerful ministries but who failed to stay pure and holy in their faith-walk with Christ. They noticed that the power of God did not leave them and that they kept on being instruments in the hands of God despite the presence of sin in their lives. We think of people like David in the Bible, John Alexander Dowie, Evan Roberts, William Branham, Jack Coe, AA Allen and even Kathryn Kuhlman. Many people think that this is OK and some even use this as an excuse to do the very same things that these people did. “God will not take the gift away!”

What people do not realize is that although God never takes our gifts away, He is not going to allow us to operate and function in His power for an indefinite period of time. If we do not yet operate in His power when we start moving away from His will, He will not allow us to operate in His power at all.

Money! What a Babylonian Confusion!

We are actually hurting the body of Christ if we minister like these people did after they started drifting away from God’s will for their lives. Depending on the degree of harm that we are causing, God will take us out sooner or later. Most of these ministers that I mentioned did not live long after they moved away from God’s will in terms of sin in their lives or in terms of drifting away from their initial callings. Some, like David and Kathryn Kuhlman repented and managed to restore their ministries and callings. Others like Dowie, Branham, Roberts, Coe and Allen were not so lucky.

Kenneth Hagin was used by God a few times in his life to warn ministers who moved away from the will of God. Kenneth testified that he saw a number of them die in the pulpit by means of a stroke, a heart attack or even in a motor accident shortly after they failed to heed to these warnings from God.

The moment we step out of God’s will and His word we actually become a problem to the kingdom of God and the body of Christ. God loves us so much and He will try everything He can to bring us back to our senses. However, because of the harm we are causing the body of Christ, He cannot and will not allow us to live and minister this way. The ministers that I mentioned above all received warnings to repent and to live according to the requirements that God gave Allen. If they did not repent He took them out. They all died prematurely and at the peak of their ministries relatively soon after they moved away from the will of God. This is Biblical. God did this to people in the Old Testament and the new Testament. He has no choice if we refuse to repent and if we refuse to heed to His warnings.

For those of you who want to minister in God’s power, please understand that holiness is probably the most important requirement in order for you to do that.

When you read the requirements on the list that God gave AA Allen, you might feel that it is very difficult to live such holy and dedicated lives. Some might even feel that it is impossible to live like that. The truth is that it can be quite easy to live like God wants us to live. God made it really easy for us. Read all about this in the post, “Getting rid of the weeds“.

Although God made it easy for us to live holy lives, it is also very easy to move away from the will and the word of God.

Let us look for a moment into the life of Kathryn Kuhlman. Early in her ministry she got involved in an affair with a married man:

Kathryn met Burroughs Waltrip, an extremely handsome Texas evangelist who was eight years her senior. Despite the fact that he was married with two small boys, they soon found themselves attracted to each other. Shortly after his visit to Denver, Waltrip divorced his wife and left his family.

Burroughs and Kathryn decided to get married. While discussing the matter with some friends, Kathryn had said that she could not “find the will of God in the matter.” These and other friends encouraged her not to go through with the marriage, but Kathryn justified it to herself and others by believing that Waltrip’s wife had left him, not the other way around. On October 18th, 1938, Kathryn secretly married “Mister,” as she liked to call Waltrip, in Mason City.

– God’s Generals, Roberts Liardon

The consequences of this marriage was really a big problem for Kathryn. She was very unhappy and she could not minister anymore.

In a moment’s time, the ministry that Kathryn had so diligently built was completely undone. People stopped attending her services. Her ministry was dissolved. Kathryn sold her portion of the Tabernacle. She’d lost everything. Her relationship with the Lord had suffered because she had put a man before her God.

– God’s Generals, Roberts Liardon

Kathryn Kuhlman really caused a lot of harm to the body of Christ. The marriage should not have happened. It was a sin and against the word and the will of God. The Bible is clear about that. Kathryn wanted to get out of that situation. She wanted to divorce Waltrip. Although this was again against the word of God, she decided to do it anyway. Kathryn Kuhlman never said that God led her to divorce Waltrip. She decided to get this whole mistake behind her even if it meant going against the word of God again. She probably wept before the Lord because of regret about the whole thing. After she wept before God she went home, packed her stuff and she walked out on her husband.

From the moment she made the decision to divorce Waltrip and to surrender herself fully to the Lord, she never wavered again in answering the call that God had placed on her life so many years before.

– God’s Generals, Roberts Liardon

Kathryn truly repented and from then on she lived a holy life before her God.

It is so easy to believe a lie when you really want to do something that is clearly against the word and the will of God. Do you know how many people, because of the mistakes of Kathryn Kuhlman, were led by the enemy to think that God instructed Kathryn to divorce her husband? Do you know how many people, as a result of this, decided to divorce their spouses because they feel it is the will of God? This is part of the harm that Kathryn Kuhlman caused the body of Christ when she moved away from His will and His word.

With God there is never a divine exception! God’s word is always relevant and always true no matter who you are and no matter what the circumstances. We cannot live or act contrary to the will and the word of God without causing unwanted, bad and even devastating consequences.

Many times people and even ministers believe what they want, even if what they believe is clearly against the will and the word of God. Because of this we currently have serious problems in the body of Christ. Many ministers believe that there is nothing wrong with pornography! How on earth is this possible? It is possible because it is easy for the enemy to deceive people who want to be deceived. We as ministers of God should guard against this. We should seriously and diligently pursue holiness.

Do you want to live a holy and an obedient life before your God? Do you want to do things that are pleasing in His sight? If you do, then you qualify to ask Him whatsoever you want to and you will receive it. If you do live a God-pleasing life in the presence of God, His miracle-working power will work in your life and in your ministry. You will not harm the body of Christ, on the contrary, you will be a blessing to the body of Christ.

1 John 3:21-22

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

  1. I notices that a lot of preachers never had the revelation of Jesus Christ which is God in Christ. St John 17: 21″That they all shall be one, just as you, my Father, are in me, and I am in you, so that they also shall be one in us, so that the world shall believe that you have sent me.”
22″And I have given them the glory that you have given me, so that they shall be one, just as we are one.” 23″I in them and you in me, so that they shall be perfected as one, and so that the world shall know that you have sent me, and that you have loved them just as you have also loved Me.” 24″Father, I will that these whom you have given me, that where I am they shall also be with me, that they shall see my glory which you have given me, because you have loved me from before the foundation of the world.”
